Tai's first haircut; Family's first portrait

Tai got his first haircut by a stylist named Mommy today to get the hair out of his eyes. Now he looks like a big boy.

It seems like the haircut would produce more hair, but Tai's hair is still thin and his head is not that big yet.

In other firsts, our first family portrait arrived in the mail today. The shot above is a picture of a canvas portrait so the colors are not totally right. The real thing looks great. I have to say, it's nice to have a family portrait. Now where will we put it up in the condo?

And a few more firsts we don't have pictures of yet: Friday, while crawling into every room, Tai found the bathroom, stood up by the can and flushed the toilet. Flush. There we go. And Tai's teeth are finally coming in. We can really feel the jagged little edges on the bottom.

Clapping to the Music

In one of those moments where Tai does something that his parents make a bigger deal out of than what actually might be happening . . . on the car ride home from Picante yesterday, Tai started clapping to the song on the radio! Or if not to the music, at least he was clapping to what seemed like a pretty steady beat. Or maybe it was the beans, which he loved by the way (but paid for dearly later that night). Anyway, so we don't forget the song, here it is, Tai's first clapping song.

Speaking of Parliament Funkadelic, if Tai's hair keeps growing the way it's going, we're gonna have to call him T-Funk.

Moving right along

Cal alumni

After Thu passed her orals, she got an iPhone from some people. Now on her days off with Tai, she takes photos like the one above and sends them to those people, brightening their days.

Harmless Bob

Tai is still afraid of dogs, even though it doesn't really look like it in this picture. And I'll have to get a video of this when it happens again. Tai is even afraid of a little toy dog that rolls forward on the table and plays music when you wind it up. The thing is, Tai likes playing with the toy, just when it's not moving.

Yesterday, we reached a milestone. When Gavin came home from work, Tai bolted to the doorway, crawling to greet Daddy. That was the first time that happened. Felt very nice.

Baseball etc.

Testing the bobblehead trophy.

The blog has fallen behind the past few weeks. It might have something to do with the start of the baseball season. Tai and his father started a website this year called Fantasy Baseball Champ. Maybe we spoke to soon. Repeating as champs will be harder this year. Not to make excuses, but conducting a draft while having Easter dinner at your in-laws, although not strictly frowned upon, does make for some awkward moments. And thus I lost my concentration, etc., etc. . . .

Drool

Perhaps blogging time has gone down because Tai is crawling and "furniture walking" in every direction. Sometimes he stands in his crib until he literally falls asleep, all of which exhausts his parents. That said, Tai is more fun than ever before. He spits rain through his vibrating lips and shouts happy screams all the time. He blows kisses, waves hello and goodbye, claps, and still laughs very loudly. . . .

Stick to eating Auntie Uyen's vegetables.

Another event that happened . . . on April 2, Tai suffered his first allergic outbreak. He ate some eggs at daycare. And we think that's what caused welts to break out all over his body. We got him to the doctor. His breathing was fine. We gave him half a strip of Benadryl and after a three-hour nap, Tai was all better. What a scare! The first of many. . . .

Daycare "Crisis" Averted

Ever since two Wednesdays ago, the day of the daycare drama, Tai has been doing wonderfully there. Last Thursday, we happened to pick him up a half-hour early on our way to the airport, and peeked over the fence to see the kids in the backyard. They all looked so cute playing on a sunny day, the others running around the slide set, while Tai was straight up relaxing getting pulled in the wagon.

So far (knock on wood), Tai has been a good boy at daycare, remarkably relaxed at drop-off, and super happy at pick-up time. Big smiles all around for everyone.

Certainly, a big source of Tai's frustration, the inability to get around by himself, is now gone with his ability to crawl. And on our part, if there's anything we learned from our mistakes, it is to treat the morning as a fun family time instead of a hurried rush to get out the door. . . .

Tai and Grandpa in the sun.

In other news, we spent last weekend in LA to attend the wedding of Gavin's childhood friend, Eric, and his new wife, Michele. It was a beautiful ceremony and reception, and it was so bright, that of course, Tai had to wear his shades.

And . . . we celebrated Mommy's __rd birthday with a sushi dinner at Momoyama on Friday. Video of that to come soon! (To fill in the blank, there's only one ordinal number within reason that can go there.)

Behold, the limitations of cell phone video!
